Making of the ‘Map of Saints’

The inspiration behind this piece came from learning of Alan Moore’s book ‘Jerusalem’ – a genre-defying novel that is wholly contained within Northampton. Being an avid fan of Moore’s after reading ‘Watchmen’, I looked online to find a map that showed which areas were mentioned as I was interested to see if my home suburb of Abington was included. I found an old ordnance survey map from the 1950’s and loved its vintage feel, so in very Saint Gustaf-fashion I wanted to throw a few skulls on there and create a design with it.

I created a Saints ambigram – which can be flipped and still yield the same meaning – as I’ve loved this form of calligraphy since stumbling upon it years ago when I read ‘Angels and Demons’ and first saw John Langdon’s art. Threw all these elements together and personally numbered and signed 100 copies to finish off the prints. Ultimately this piece is a homage to Northampton’s history (with the old Northampton map) and a nod to the future (with the inclusion of the Saint’s new logo).

I hope it makes Northampton residents proud of their past and hopeful for what this rugby team and town are destined for in the future.
